대학로의 상징인 아르코 미술관은 골목과 도시를 차단하는 거대한 ‘벽’으로 존재한다. 이 단절을 회복하기 위해, 육중한 벽돌 매스를 작은 단위인 ‘아르코 조각들’로 쪼갰다. 파편화되어 겹쳐진 매스들은 ‘미술관 속의 극장’이라는 새로운 층위를 형성한다. 관람객은 객석에서 무대를 바라보듯, 혹은 무대 위 주인공이 되어 관객을 마주하듯 작품을 다각적인 시선으로 경험한다. 대학로를 가로막는 벽이 아닌, 사람들에게 서서히 다가가는 미술관과 공원을 조성하고자 했다.
The Arko Art Center, a symbol of Daehak-ro, stands like a massive “wall” cutting off the alleys from the city. To restore this urban context, the heavy brick mass was broken down into smaller units, “Arko Pieces.”. These overlapping fragments form a new spatial layer, where art is experienced through shifting perspectives. The project seeks to create a museum and park that, rather than blocking the city, gradually reach out to the people.

Linked by red bricks, the Arko Theater and Art Center stand alongside Marronnier Park as symbols of Daehak-ro.
1960년대 시와 낭만이 대학천과 함께 흐르던 소통의 장에서 1990년대 이후 버스킹과 휴식이 공존하는 현재까지, 아르코 미술관과 마로니에 공원 일대는 시대의 흐름을 담고 있다.
From 1960s, where poetry flowed with the Daehak-cheon stream to today, where busking and relaxation coexist, the area has long embodied the changing times.
하지만 현재의 아르코 미술관은 그 역할을 온전히 수행하고 있을까?
주변 건물들에 비해 거대하게 펼쳐진 미술관은 대학로의 시작을 알리는 상징인 동시에, 골목길과 도시 조직을 차단하는 거대한 ‘벽’으로 기능하고 있다.
However, is the current Arko Art Center fully fulfilling its role?
Spreading massively compared to its surroundings, the museum marks the beginning of Daehak-ro but functions as a giant “wall” that severs the connection between the alleys and the urban fabric at the same time.
Concept
아르코 미술관과 마로니에 공원이 본연의 역할을 다하기 위해선, 대학로 예술가와 대중 사이의 연결이 일어나야 한다. 기존의 제한적인 틀에서 벗어나, 다양한 형태의 예술작품을 수용할 수 있는 다각적 공간을 확보하고, 작은 작품부터 무대 장치까지 수용할 수 있는 능력을 갖춰야 한다. 나아가 대중이 자연스럽게 호기심을 느끼고, 미술관 내부로 들어와 관람할 수 있게끔 만들어야 한다.
For the museum and park to achieve their true purpose, a connection between artists and the public must be forged. The space must break free from its restrictive framework to secure multifaceted areas capable of hosting everything from small artworks to large stage installations, naturally inviting the public inside.
기존의 육중한 벽돌 매스를 주변 건물의 규모에 맞춰 작은 단위인 ‘아르코 조각들’로 쪼개어 도시의 맥락 속에 녹아들게 했다. 파편화된 매스들은 절반씩 포개어지며 ‘미술관 속의 극장’이라는 새로운 공간적 층위를 형성한다. 관람객은 단순히 작품을 보는 것을 넘어, 객석에서 무대를 바라보듯, 혹은 무대 위 주인공이 되어 관객을 마주하듯, 한 작품을 다각적인 시선으로 경험한다.
캔틸레버 구조를 통해 공중에 띄워진 조각들은 관람객의 머리 위를 지나며 미술관 내부와 외부를 경계 없이 드나드는 듯한 느낌을 준다. 모든 지지 구조를 내부로 숨겨, 매스가 부유하는 느낌을 극대화했다. 특히 매스의 외피 중 일부는 대리석을 얇게 가공하여 유리 사이에 삽입한 특수 패널을 적용했다. 낮엔 무거운 돌덩어리가 떠있는 느낌을 주고, 밤엔 전시실에서 패널을 통해 은은하게 새어 나오는 빛이 전시실이 공중에 떠있는 느낌을 준다.
The original heavy brick mass was broken down into smaller units, “Arko Pieces,” scaled to the surrounding buildings to blend into the urban context. These fragmented, overlapping masses form a new spatial layer, “Theater within a Museum.” Visitors experience art through shifting perspectives such as looking at a stage from the seats or facing an audience as a protagonist.
Suspended by a cantilever structure, these pieces pass over the heads of visitors, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior. By concealing all support structures, the sensation of floating is maximized. A specialized panel, featuring thinly sliced marble sandwiched between glass, was applied to parts of the facade. By day, it creates the tension of a heavy stone hovering in mid-air; by night, the soft light filtering through the panels evokes a sense of ethereal suspension.
Programs
1층은 두 개의 전시실과 대학로 예술가들을 위한 개방형 커뮤니티 공간으로 구성했다. 전시의 다양성을 위해 기존 미술관의 2층 슬라브 일부를 철거하여 높은 층고를 확보했다. 또, 미술관 조각들을 마로니에 공원과 뒷길을 향해 뻗어 나가게 하여 사람들에게 더 가까이 다가갈 수 있게 했다.
특히 공원과 마주하는 파사드는 극대화된 투명성을 부여하여 내부의 예술 활동이 거리로 보이게 했다. 전시를 관람하는 사람들의 모습과 전시 작품 자체가 거리의 풍경이 되며, 자연스럽게 미술관 내부로 발걸음을 유도한다.
The first floor consists of two galleries and an open community space for artists. To enhance curatorial diversity, parts of the original second-floor slab were removed to secure high ceilings. Furthermore, the “pieces” extend toward Marronnier Park and the backstreets, reaching out to the people.
The facade facing the park is granted maximized transparency, turning internal artistic activities into a streetscape. The presence of visitors and the artworks themselves become a public exhibition, naturally drawing passersby inside.
대리석 패널로 둘러싸인 큐브 전시관은 기존 슬라브 높이를 유지하며 2층 아카이브실, 3층 전시실로 확장된다. 관람객은 큐브 속에서 투명한 유리를 통해 1층의 전시를 내려다보며, 다양한 시점으로 전시를 관람할 수 있다.
The marble-clad cubes maintain the original slab heights, extending into the second-floor archive and third-floor galleries. From within these cubes, visitors can look down upon the first-floor exhibitions through transparent glass, enjoying the art from various vantage points.
